About Me: An a creative child, Joshua Moses grew up in the 1980s near St. Louis, Missouri. As a young boy, Moses was wowed by the Michael J. Fox performance of the Chuck Berry classic, “Johnny B. Goode” in the movie "Back to the Future". After seeing the movie, a very young Moses took up the guitar and began listening to artists like Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and his personal idol, Stevie Ray Vaughn.
After leaving High School, Moses joined the United States Air Force where he traveled the world honing his craft. Shortly after leaving the military, Moses relocated back to St. Louis where he became a regular at songwriter nights around the city. Moses eventually met up with drummer Matt Martin of Sinister Dane who realized the potential of the young guitar slinger. Moses joined the band not long after, with both Moses and Martin playing and touring with Sinister Dane and Great Big Everything. Eventually Columbia pulled the plug on Sinister Dane, but not before Moses had ran into an old friend in Rob Womble. The pair quickly put together a lineup that would eventually be known as Sevenkiller. Building the group they added Paul Wilson on Bass and Casey Camden on vocals. They worked the clubs by night and sent out countless demo discs of original material by day. The group self-released their debut recording, The Point, in 2002. The following March, The group appeared at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Their performance so impressed executives at Columbia Records that they were subsequently signed to Columbia subsidiary, Aware Records.
Shortly after signing, a rift developed between Camden and the rest of the band. Feeling that he could do better on his own, he parted from the band leaving just the trio without a singer. Following a six month search for a replacement, the guys sat down in the studio and decided to record one another singing to see if there was anything there. What came out was magic. Quickly solidifying Moses as a bonified frontman, the band set off to conquer the world. But tragedy was looming. Early in 2004, the three took a break and decided to spend some time at home with family and friends. On March 2nd, Moses departed via plane from Denver CO to St. Louis for his daughter’s birthday the next day. That night Wilson and Womble followed, but could only get a flight to Chicago… where they decided to drive the eight hour trip home. They wouldn’t make it. At some time during the trip near Shelbyville IL, Wilson fell asleep at the wheel. The car rolled over an embankment killing him and injuring Womble.
After the death of Paul Wilson, the two felt to go on would be important…however a new name was necessary. They came up with the name Mother Night, the name of a favorite book to Moses. While still grieving the loss of Wilson, a chance meeting would change the fate of the band. Going grocery shopping one day, Moses literally walked into an old friend in Eli Butcher. Butcher had played with Moses in a short-lived jam band and had also been a first choice of his for Sevenkiller, but was unable to be located at the time. It took little convincing to bring Butcher aboard, and thus became Mother Night.
Upon the release of their debut album, Road Alone, 2006…the group was swallowed up in the purchase of Columbia/Aware Records by Sony. Lacking the initial backing push they had expected, the band found themselves fighting to keep their contract. Eventually in late 2007, Sony noticing that Moses was the sole songwriter/contributor turned the group into a solo artist. Joshua Moses’s debut album is set to release in the winter 2008.
